Career Highlights

Robert Sims is highly regarded for his “moving” and “authentic” interpretations of African American spirituals and has given spiritual recitals throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. He captures in his vocal interpretations the richness of those African American vocal traditions which enrich and brings to life the cultural heritage that define us as a nation. He is one of our nation’s most talented and versatile musical performers. Robert Sims understands his craft… he sings with a remarkable degree of passion and depth of feeling, bringing the music alive with rich, dramatic and relevant brilliance.

His career highlights include:

  • Performed as a soloist before audiences at Carnegie Hall in 2005, 2009 and most recently in 2012
  • Performed in a duo concert with the legendary folk singer Odetta
  • Featured soloist performing with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra for the Heritage Day telecast
  • Performed in 2006 at New York’s Lincoln Center accompanied by the Ritz Chamber Players
  • Gold Medal recipient in the 1999 American Traditions Vocal Competition
  • Soloist performing before the Congressional Medal of Honor recipients at Chicago’s Patriots Awards Ceremony
  • Performed in the Spirituals Christmas Concert with the United Kingdom Gibraltar Philharmonic
  • Featured soloist performing at the Smithsonian for its “Wade in the Water, African American Sacred Traditions Exhibit” recital of African American Spirituals
  • Performed as a soloist at a number of renowned American churches: San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral, New York’s historic Abyssinian Baptist Church, the Crystal Cathedral’s “Hour of Power”, the American Church in Paris and for Coretta King at Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church
  • Featured performer at internationally recognized venues – Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry performing in the “Live on Stage Performance Series” concert of spirituals, San Francisco’s Yoshi’s, Chicago’s Ravinia Music Festival and the Savannah Music Festival
  • Performed as soloist with the Leonard Bernstein Pacific Music Festival Orchestra touring Tokyo, Kobe, Kyoto and Sapporo, Japan
